Disabling Auto Restart in Windows Update

OK, this is not something new, but it sure is helpful to some people.

Ever since Microsoft release Windows XP Service Pack 2, the company keeps emphasizing the fact that you should enable Automatic Updates on your computer. Fair enough, but the problem is, it tries to outsmart you by restarting your PC automatically if you are not logged on to the computer, or you do not respond to the confirmation dialog within 5 minutes. Say good bye to your unsaved works, unfinished downloads, incompleted defragmentation. This is just more than annoying.

How to disable it:
1. In the Start Menu go to Run type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
2. Navigate to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Template -> Windows Components -> Windows Update
3. Double click on No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations
4. In the settings window Choose Enabled and click OK
5. Close Group Policy Editor

The reason why I put this up: one of my PCs got restarted yesterday. All works were gone.

You can only do this in XP Pro, XP Home does not have gpedit.

    Thanks man!
I’ve had a really messed up dvd being ripped and repaired for ages, at 84% now and it tries to restart, stopped it just in time.
Now I don’t need to worry about it.
