The time has finally come. For many years, hackers around the around have requested Sun Microsystems to open source Java. Being free is apparently not enough for them.
And now, Sun has announced that they have made Java a free software under the GNU General Public License version two (GPLv2). The open source Java now has a home here.
Besides, Sun is alsoadding the GPLv2 license to its Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE), which has been available for over a year under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) through Project GlassFish.

Getting free software isn’t easy as it may sound, especially for those living in Africa where fast broadband access isn’t always an option. The Freedom Toaster is a conveniently located, self-contained ‘Bring ‘n Burn’ facility, where users bring their own blank discs and make copies of the open source software they require.
Some of the software it currently serves: Ubuntu Linux, Mandriva Linux, Fedora Core 3/4 and OpenOffice.org. Want a free software? Just bring along a blank CD.

Another Skype threat after Gizmo, VoipBuster, Yahoo Messenger and the mighty Google Talk, OpenWengo is an open source alternative for Skype which includes features such as sip calls, SMS, video conference, and automatic NAT configuration. Currently under heavy development, you can download the stable Windows 2000/XP client and the beta versions for the Linux and Apple variants. The project is calling for developers too.
