China to ban VOIP calls for at least two years

China is a wonderful country where everything can just happen without a reason (well, apparently they do have a reason, read on). In order to protect its fixed telephone line business, the Chinese government has imposed a ban on free Internet telephone services for at least two years, the Financial Times reports.

China Telecom has described Skype’s services as illegal, and the government would not issue any licenses for computer-to-telephone calls until 2008.

Skype and Voipbuster credits: going, going, gone!

Are you a user of Skype or Voipbuster that lets you call from your computers? If you happen to be one, do you use their “premium service” that lets you buy credits to call to regular phones? If you do, chances are you did not know that the credit you purchased would one day expire.

Video plug-in for Google Talk and Skype

One missing piece of the popular Skype and Google Talk software is their ability to do video conferencing. MSN and Yahoo Messenger have had the feature for years.

Now, instead of waiting for the video feature to be made officially, you can download the third party plug-in featured here - Festoon.

With more than 2.75 million downloads and over 40 million video call user minutes, Festoon (vSkype) adds to its overwhelming success as the most popular Skype plug in, by now enabling Google Talk users to see who they’re talking to with live video.

The first Google Talk video plugin, Festoon lets Google Talk users talk to and see each other in a video voice call. Supporting group calls of 2 to 200, users can also share pictures or other applications on their desktop. And, like cell phone ringtones, Festoon offers a series of immersive video effects that enable Google Talk users to express themselves and personalize their video experience.

Festoon currently works as a plug-in to both Google Talk and Skype.

eBay to acquire Skype for $2.6 billion

The rumor I reported last week turned out to be true. EBay, the world’s biggest online auction site has announced that they have agreed to acquire Luxembourg-based Skype Technologies SA for a whopping 2.6 billion dollars. The official announcement has been made avialable on Skype’s homepage here.

Remember the fact that there is only one software by Skype. How many copies of Windows does Microsoft have to sell in order to raise that amount of money?

eBay may buy Skype

Reports claim that the number 1 online auction site eBay may spend 2 to 3 billion dollars to buy Skype.

Another Skype threat after Gizmo, VoipBuster, Yahoo Messenger and the mighty Google Talk, OpenWengo is an open source alternative for Skype which includes features such as sip calls, SMS, video conference, and automatic NAT configuration. Currently under heavy development, you can download the stable Windows 2000/XP client and the beta versions for the Linux and Apple variants. The project is calling for developers too.
