In China and Taiwan, Starbucks is known to the Chinese as Xing Ba Ke, in which Xing means Star in mandarin and Ba Ke is a phonetic rendition of “bucks”. That’s why Starbucks got so annoyed when its competitor decided to register the name “Xingbake” and run a coffee business. The court has recently ruled that Shanghai Xingbake has infringed the copyright of Starbucks and ordered the company to pay the real Starbucks 500,000 yuan (~$62,000) in damages.
