New Microsoft homepage

Expect Microsoft to perform a major interface uplift for its homepage soon. The new interface is still in beta and being tested. It sports new navigation system, uses lightboxes extensively and more importantly, it’s standard compliant with tableless design.

So far, it works with Mozilla Firefox very well.

You can view the beta version here.

Teen faces jail for stealing wi-fi connection

The next time you discover some ‘leaked’ free wireless Internet connection from your neighbor into your house, don’t be too excited and go stop your own broadband subscription. A teen in Singapore has been using his neighbor’s unprotected Wi-Fi connection without permission. He now faces charges punishable by up the three years imprisonment.

Garyl Tan Jia Luo, 17, is the first person to face charges under Singapore’s Computer Misuse Act, the Straits Times via AP reports. The teenager also faces a possible fine of up to 10,000 Singapore dollars ($6,425) if convicted despite the lack of aggravating factors to his alleged crimes.

Java is now open source

The time has finally come. For many years, hackers around the around have requested Sun Microsystems to open source Java. Being free is apparently not enough for them.

And now, Sun has announced that they have made Java a free software under the GNU General Public License version two (GPLv2). The open source Java now has a home here.

Besides, Sun is alsoadding the GPLv2 license to its Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE), which has been available for over a year under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) through Project GlassFish.

Google Video virus

To know what’s hot on Google Video, you may opt to subscribe to the Google Video blog group, an announcement only group run by Google Video team, which is sent on a daily basis to update you the fun and interesting video clips.

The mailing list was recently exploited to send viruses to its subscribers. As many as 4 mails have managed to pass whatever checks Google has to ensure the mail is only sent by the manager of the list.

And here’s Google’s response:

On Tuesday evening, three posts were made to the Google Video
Blog-group that should not have been posted. This has now been
addressed and fixed.

Still, some of these posts may have contained a virus called
W32/Kapser.A@mm — a mass mailing worm. If you think you have
downloaded this virus from the group or an email message, we recommend
you run your antivirus program to remove it. If you do not have an
antivirus program, you can download Norton AntiVirus software for free
from the Google pack,

We’re sorry for any inconvenience, and we’re taking steps to ensure
that this doesn’t happen again.

Don’t worry, you still can’t get any virus by playing videos posted on Google Video.
